Qatar University to Increase Services for Students with Disabilities
By Andrea Shettle, MSW | August 17, 2008
Qatar University has now pledged that its students with disabilities will have the services and resources they need to access its varsity programs, the Peninsula On-Line has said ("Qatar University bid to take care of students with special needs"). The university already had students with disabilities in its programs, but is expanding its range of services to meet their needs. This change comes soon after an earlier announcement by the Qatar government that it is expanding its protections for the human rights of people with disabilities. These changes are happening in part as a result of Qatar’s ratification of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in May 2008.
The CRPD is the first legally-binding international agreement among the world’s countries to protect the human rights of people with disabilities. The 34 countries that have ratified the treaty, including Qatar, are obligated to create laws as needed that protect the rights of people with disabilities and to abolish laws that violate them. The international pact protects a wide range of human rights such as the right to liberty; the right to vote and participate in public and cultural life; the right to privacy; the right to accessible education, health care, and public transportation; and many more.
