Landmine Survivors Will Benefit from International Disability Rights Agreement
By Andrea Shettle, MSW | May 16, 2008
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) welcomes the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) as a tool that will help landmine survivors, Relief Web has reported. (See article entitled "ICBL urges all countries to join the UN disability rights convention")
The CRPD, which entered into force earlier this month, is the first international, legally-binding human rights instrument to protect the rights of people with disabilities. It covers a wide range of human rights, such as the right to marry and divorce and to share equally in child custody; the right to work and an adequate standard of living; the right to habilitation and rehabilitation; the right to sign contracts and own property; and many more.
