Researching the CRPD On-Line
By Andrea Shettle, MSW | March 17, 2008
How to Research the CRPD so you can blog about it for the RatifyNow CRPD Blog Swarm 2008
What’s the RatifyNow CRPD Blog Swarm 2008?
By now, you might recall that Ratifynow.org will be celebrating the first anniversary of the international disability rights treaty, called the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), by hosting a blog swarm. We’re looking for bloggers and other writers to contribute blog posts to the RatifyNow CRPD Blog Swarm 2008!
If you missed the original announcement, it’s at http://ratifynow.org/2008/03/11/join-crpd-swarm-2008/ Or check the main page for the blog swarm at http://ratifynow.org/latest-news/blog-swarm/.
Maybe you were thinking of participating but weren’t sure you should because you don’t know much about the CRPD. Here are some useful links you can use to educate yourself. Follow just one, or follow many—it’s up to you.
Five Minutes of Research!
- Just read the RatifyNow FAQ and start writing!
- Or read a list of civil rights covered in the CRPD—and start writing!
http://ratifynow.org/un-convention/civil-rights-in-the-crpd/
- Find some quick facts on disability by skimming through the United Nation’s fact sheet:
10 to 20 Minutes of Research!
- If you have a little more time, then you may also wish to read an abbreviated version of the CRPD from the United Nations. This resource summarizes some of the highlights from among the 50 articles that form the CRPD:
- Or, if you prefer, you can read just one article (section) from the CRPD. Check the full list of 50 articles in the CRPD. Click any that appeals to you. Read the article. Then start writing!
15 to 30 Minutes of Research!
http://www.unicef.org/voy/media/Child_friendly_CRPD.doc
Or you can read it in PDF format at:
30 Minutes or More of Research!
- Start by reading just one article from the CRPD (you choose which one):
http://www.un.org/disabilities/default.asp?id=259
Next, use google or another search engine to see what else has already been written about that article. Reading additional material might help you gain a better understanding of the full implications of what that article might mean for people with disabilities, either in your country or elsewhere.
- Or, if you’re interested in the CRPD as a whole, and you aren’t satisfied with the abbreviated version (or the child-friendly version), then read the full length version:
http://www.un.org/disabilities/default.asp?id=259
Or if you have trouble with the legal language in the CRPD, read the plain-text version:
- Or perhaps your interest is in the process of ratifying and implementing the CRPD. What’s the difference between “signing” and “ratifying” the CRPD? What are some strategies that different countries might use to persuade their governments to ratify the CRPD? What about the 17 countries (and counting!) that have now ratified? How do countries—and disability rights advocates—make sure the CRPD is fully implemented?
Learn more about the process by skimming through the “ratification toolkit” or the “implementation toolkit” provided by Disabled People International:
- What else do you want to learn about? Maybe we have it. Explore some of the resources and links right here at the RatifyNow web site. For example, you could learn what some advocates have done to mobilize support at the local level within the United States at http://ratifynow.org/get-involved/gaining-local-support/.
Or you could learn about the Optional Protocol, which has been ratified by 11 countries. This is particularly relevant for anyone who worries about what people with disabilities can do if their government ratifies the CRPD but continues to violate their rights anyway:
http://ratifynow.org/un-convention/the-optional-protocol/
Or check under the blog roll, list of disability organizations, or list of links, all in the right-hand navigation bar for more information about the CRPD and disability rights elsewhere.
